DESIGNER INFORMATION
Friso Kramer (1922-2019) was a distinguished Dutch industrial designer, celebrated for his innovative, timeless, and highly functional designs. He started in 1948 at the Cirkel, the steel furniture brand that was majorly taken over by Ahrend in 1941. He presented the Ahrend Revolt chair in 1953, a real breakthrough in industrial design and mass production. Together with the Facet table you can still find it in schools worldwide.
In 1963 he co-founded the influential design agency Total Design with Wim Crouwel and others. The agency played a pivotal role in shaping Dutch design. “Kramer taught us the art of leaving things out.”, his former colleagues at Ahrend remembered. “If form doesn’t contribute to the function, it has no right of existence”; Kramer said. With his minimalist design, he was at the basis of the very successful ‘Dutch Design’ movement. “You have to wander through the factory for days, watching and then start thinking efficiently”, he once said “je have to look for all excessive things, search for them, track them down, chop them off, throw them away. Then you see what’s left over and you work with that”.
He designed also a lot of street furniture, like mailboxes. His green, cone shaped street lantern the ‘Kramer 1’ can still be found in some Holland cities like The Hague.
In 1977 and 1978, a retrospective of his work was held at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and in 1991 at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. On the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Amsterdam Arts Council Kramer had a board seat.
He died in 2019 at the age of 96.
