Francisco Toledo was born in 1940 in Juchitán, Mexico. He studied at the Benito Juarez Autonomous University in Oaxaca and the Taller Libre de Grabado in Mexico City before moving to Paris at age 17 and learning from writer Octavio Paz, painter Rufino Tamayo, and many others. Toledo also honed his printmaking skills in the studio of Stanley William Hayter.
Francisco Toledo’s style can be described as ‘the art of shamanism’: works made on Ostrich eggs and tree barks. Drawings and ceramics of existing and mythical animals blended with humans and other things that paid homage to the myths and stories Toledo imbibed growing up in an indigenous Zapotec family. His French years were also important: “the influence of Picasso, Miró, Dubuffet, and all the art that does something with primitivism”, said Toledo.
Returned to Mexico in 1965, Toledo became a part of “la Ruptura” (or the Breakaway Generation), a group of Mexican artists working against established nationalistic styles. Toledo settled in Oaxaca and became a key figure of Mexican art and cultural preservation of Zapotec traditions in Oaxaca.
n the 1970s, he began to look into certain artisanal techniques –like textile and pottery– which would influence his latter artistic creation. Toledo is known for his works on paper, especially intaglio prints and paintings, but he created thousands of artworks including collages, tapestries, and ceramics. His work often features Zapotec imagery from his indigenous pre-Columbian heritage. His style is described as using folklore, Shamanism, and mysticism to blend animals and humans; Expressionistic; and environmental. Toledo was known as El Maestro, the master or teacher, who was devoted to bringing art to the masses. His work was not only expressionistic but also environmental and laced with activism.
He was deeply invested in his community in Oaxaca and thus created the Oaxaca Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Graphic Arts Institute of Oaxaca, a library for the blind, a photographic arts center, a botanical garden, and more. He described these projects as his inspiration to continue producing and selling art. In the fall 2015 he opened Duelo (Mourning) his first new exhibition in 35 years, a big ceramics exposition in Mexico City’s Museo de Arte Moderno to express his outrage about the shocking disappearance and murder on 43 Mexican students in Guerrero, Mexico, executed presumably by the local police that bonded with local drug cartels. A year earlier Toledo painted portraits of the students on 43 kites, and encouraged people in Oaxaca to fly these works of art as protests, And so “Ayotzinapa Kites” was another happening that raised awareness as it memorialized the victims.
He is regarded by many as Mexico’s greatest living artist until his passing in 2019. His works are in the collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among other major international institutions and collections.
