The Tijsseling factory found its origin in Barneveld in Holland where Hermanus Jacobus Tijsseling bought a carpenter shop. Quickly he started a store where he sold beautiful, durable furniture and music organs. In November 1930 Hermanus Jacobus moved to Nijkerk where he started a big production facility. By the end of the thirties, he had already 90 workers in service. During World War a part of the factory was bombed and rebuilt quickly afterwards. During its golden era, from the post-war years up until the oil crisis in the 1970’s, the factory employed over 300 people. The factory even had their own fire squad, a football club and shooting range. They worked with designers like Gijs van der Sluis. Their approach in style was often rather minimalistic. Other famous design was the Hairpin desk with metal legs. The clean lines and quality from their Propos series make that people mistake it often for being Danish design.
