DESIGNER INFORMATION
Heinz Lilienthal was born in 1927 in Neidenburg, Germany. Soon he became a creative whirlwind who showed his magic with glass, furniture, and all things decorative. Before he became an artistic force, Heinz served in the Navy during WWII, witnessing the bombings of Kiel and Wilhelmshaven firsthand before landing in British captivity. Tough times, but they didn’t dampen his spirit.
After the war, with little more than talent and determination, Heinz began sketching and painting watercolors—often trading his art for food. Talk about turning creativity into currency! From 1946 to 1949, he sharpened his skills at the Staatliche Kunstschule in Bremen. Still a student, he scored his first big gig: restoring war-damaged stained-glass windows at a Protestant church in Bremen-Blumenthal. And just like that, his career was launched.
By 1949, Heinz opened his own workshop, and by 1952, he had an entire studio dedicated to church art in Bremen-Lesum. His stained glass work? A stunning blend of figurative and abstract styles, all woven together with a unique sensitivity that made buildings come alive with color and emotion.
But he didn’t stop at stained glass. Heinz dabbled in everything from table furniture to mosaics, even designing luxurious interiors for ships owned by the legendary Greek tycoons Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos.
Heinz Lilienthal passed away on June 6, 2006, in the sunny town of Javea, Spain, but his art and legacy still shine bright.
