Painting ‘Joëlle goes off to work’ by Frederik Lizen
Original work of paint and spraypaint on wooden panels, made in 2018 by Frederik Lizen (Antwerp, 1986). This work is one of Lizens larger murals that are scathered around in the streets of the city of Antwerp in his recognisable style and humour.
Central theme of this work is Lizens take on commuting to work after he overheard his girlfriend Joëlle say “Why should going to work be so boring? Being stuck in traffic in your car everyday, there must be a more fun way to do this, no?”. Frederik surprised his girlfriend a few days later with this adventurous scene offering some alternatives. He made the work in the city centre on the Britse Lei across the National Bank where it hung for several months, surprising also thousands off passersby. The colour palette goes from earth colours to flashy. There’s animals like an elephant (with Joëlle sitting on top, a white horse ridden by Antonio Banderas, pink flamingo’s and a leopard. Returning themes like Spanish guitar players and bodyguards are only adding to the fun.
The work is presented and sold as an integral piece, consisting of 8 different panels, the utter right panel can be folded as a door, complete with a padlock, as it was originally presented in the streets of Antwerp.
There’s some paint loss because of weather elements working in on the work. An important part of Lizens practice is the influence that the weather elements, the surroundings, city dwellers and building crews have on his works. A protective layer can be applied on request when the work gets sold.

Frederik Lizen (1986, Antwerp), mostly operating under his nom de plume ‘En Plein Public’, is a Belgian artist. He has put his name literally out there since 2014 with dozens of street works, all made on his favourite canvas: the grey areas of the city of Antwerp. His work is intentionally commenting on today’s world, evoking a dialogue with it’s surroundings and making passersby smile, ponder and interact with his work. One of his most recognised murals is a 150 meter long mural in the Pelikaanstraat across Antwerp Central Station, constantly changing and shifting over the years.
In the summer of 2026 Frederik is presenting some works at Moving Motion, an exhibition in a church in Leffinge curated by Verbeke Foundation. He also took part in ‘Painting after painting’ in Smak in Ghent in 2025 and showed a big work on the facade of the M HKA in Antwerp. With ‘It’s Sunday at Sea’ and ‘the Crystal Ship’ his works were also shown in public spaces scathered over the city of Ostend.
Previously he did solo and group expostions at Geukens & De Vil, Valerie Troost, Valerie Traan, Barbé Gallery among others.
His works are part of important art collections, private collections but also the art collection of the Flemish Community (shown in the tv series Aanwinst) and the permanent collection of Verbeke Foundation. One of his last works was acquired by a collector in Libanon. Although he has a very strong connection to the city of Antwerp, Lizen also held an artist residency in Arteventura in the North of Spain and, last winter, in the refugio Val di Togno, high up in the desolate scenery of the Italian Alps.
