2-seater sofa ‘Tomate n°111’ by Christian Adam
2-Seater Tomato sofa, designed by Christian Adam for Espace Pierre Cardin and produced by DB Lambert in France in the 1970’s. This very rare sofa resembles a cut-open coeur de boeuf tomato and combines a foam filling with real leather in cigar brown, type Havane.
The Tomato chair and sofa were designed especially for the Espace Pierre Cardin, a theater, exhibition space and cultural hub in Paris, founded in 1970 by French fashion designer Pierre Cardin. Espace Pierre Cardin was more than a theatre: it functioned also as a laboratory for radical ideas in furniture, sculpture and interior design.
This re-upholstered -2-seater chair is made of seven rounded elements bound together with ropes. The design wanted to trade the rigidity of traditional midcentury sofas for comfort, sensuality and a free spirited shape. The unusual shape and soft leather upholstery make the Tomato sofa a pleasant and tactile lounging experience.
The elements are linked together with ropes that are tucked away and almost invisible. The sofa has a hidden panel underneath with small invisible feet, making sure the seat remains stable on different floors. The leather upholstery has some light scratches and patina but has no hooks or cuts anywhere. In fact, it’s in excellent condition.
The tomato chair was produced in very limited numbers during the 1970’s and the original editions are highly sought after collector items. In 2026 the Parisian fashion brand Chloé and Poltronova brought out a re-edition of the Tomato chair, but this is a vintage one, the real deal.
