Modular ‘Marsala’ sofa set by Michael Ducaroy
This 7-piece modular sofa was designed by Michel Ducaroy and produced by Ligne Roset in France during the 1970s. This set can very comfortably seat a total of 8 people. There’s 4 rounded seats that can be combined into one semi-circular piece, there’s two straight single seats and one two-seater. Thanks to the 5 interchangeable connectors you can also connect the straight single seats and two seater into one big 4-seater. The 2 armrests can be screwed easily onto eather side of these elements.
The original oversized pillows have been re-upholstered professionaly with a champagne coloured ‘Sherpa’ fabric, a rich and soft velvet fabric comparable to teddy textiles, without being overly warm.
This makes the sofa not only very comfortable all year round, but also quite luxurious. Ducaroy was famous for his low seating sofas. Because the rigid shells of the Marsala provide a good back support, this sofa offers a more defined sitting posture than the almost floor-level, body-conforming Togo.
The thermally shaped plexi glass frames are all original ones by Ligne Roset from the 1970s.There’s 2 cups with a small crack of a few centimeters on the feet (not very visisble) that have been restored and glued to prevent any further crackling. One of the armrests has a few white scratches too but further all frames are in excellent, polished condition. Each seats is attached to the cups with 3 strips of new white velcro to avoid any shoving. Underneath each seat there’s a patch of jute preventing the cushions from sliding. The zippers make sure each cushion can be cleaned inside and out easily.
The elements can be arranged as desired as they can all stand on their own too. The original printed labels by Ligne Roset are still present on the frames. It’s pretty rare to find such a big set in an excellent condition.

Michel Ducaroy was born in 1925 into a family of designers and furniture makers, whose work ranged from private homes to larger-scale projects like liners, exhibitions, and public buildings. Drawing from his family’s legacy, Ducaroy studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and gained hands-on experience in the family business before venturing out on his own as an independent designer in 1952.
Ligne Roset, a family ran business that started over 160 years ago as an atelier producing walking sticks, saw that Ducaroy was the key player they needed in pushing the technological limits of furniture design. He first collaborated with Ligne Roset in 1954, quickly becoming one of the company’s most influential designers. Especially his work with foam was very notable. In 1968, he created the Adria, one of the first modular all-foam chairs, followed by other notable pieces like Kashima, Brigantin and Safi, which featured large cushions mounted on altuglass frames.
However, it was in 1973 that Ducaroy unveiled his most iconic creation, based on the shape of a tube of toothpaste: Togo. This collection of these all-foam quirky seating, with its generously quilted polyester covers, became an almost instant classic. Its unique design, combining both comfort and versatility, allowed it to fit seamlessly into almost any interior. The big advantage of sofas like the Togo or Saparella was that they didn’t need an internal structure, since they were entirely made up of foam, an incredibly versatile and innovative material. Ducaroy retired in 1980 and passed away in 2009 but his designs still today are very popular among design enthusiasts worldwide.
