Writing desk by Gunnar Nielsen Tibergaard (Sold)
Writing desk designed by Gunnar Nielsen Tibergaard and produced by Tibergaard in Denmark in the 1960’s. This compact teak desk has two boxes with drawers one side and a bookshelf on the other end, providing plenty of storage. The slanted legs, sculpted handgrips and pointed ends of the main leaf are all signs of the high amount of detail on this small desk. Some using marks on the boxes. In good restored condition. The top has been varnished in 2 layers in our own workshop. Maker’s label imprint is still present.

Gunnar Nielsen Tibergaard was a Danish designer renowned for his contributions to mid-century modern furniture. Born in 1920 in Brædstrup, Denmark, he trained as a joiner and began his career in 1948 as a machine joiner at Ikast Møbelfabrik. By 1951, he had advanced to the role of operations manager, overseeing design, production, sales, and bookkeeping. The company was struggling in the start of the 1950’s but with a new line of products, drawn Gunnar Nielsen was able to turn the tables.
Under his savvy lead, the company exploded onto the global scene, exporting sleek Danish design to 19 countries before the ’60s even hit. In 1965 the company had about 65 employees. We’re talking the golden age of design, and Tibergaard was at the wheel of a teak spaceship.
His style? Clean lines, smart storage, and wood that just glows. Think secret minibars, smooth dovetail joints, and desks that make you feel like a boss — even if you’re just paying bills.
His pieces now live in legendary places like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhagen. Tibergaard has received several awards for his work, including the Gold Medal from the Royal Danish Industrial Design Society. Not bad for a guy who started with a hammer and a dream.
