Sofa by Hans Bellmann
This 3-Seater sofa/daybed ‘model 470’ was created in 1964 by Swiss architect Hans Bellmann and produced by Wilkhahn in Germany. The design of this grey 3-seater is remarkable with the organic backrest supports and a system where you can fold the seating forward, creating a comfortable daybed. The elegant simplicity and commitment to high-quality materials, functional form and the rejection of unnecessary decoration make the 470 a key example of Swiss modernism in furniture design. The dark grey bouclé seating upholstery, like in the original design in a muted tone, was renewed a few years ago. The lighter grey backrest upholstery shows more signs of wear on one corner. The dark teak frame is completely original and in very good condition, as shown in the pictures.

The Swiss designer and architect Hans Bellmann (1911-1990) was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin from 1931 to 1933 where he met Ludvig Mies van der Rohe. After graduating, Bellmann was hired by Mies to work as an architect in his studio, a job he held onto for 2 years, before establishing his own Zurich-based studio in 1946.
From his studio Bellmann started to explore also furniture design. True to his modernist training, Bellmann designed furniture with a focus on structure and simplicity. Bellmann is seen as one of the most important protagonists of Swiss domestic culture in the 1950s and 1960s. As an independent architect and designer, he not only developed furniture but also built single-family houses, designed interiors for furniture stores, and created industrial products. In addition, he taught at various universities like Harvard University and Washington University in Seattle, so his influence can hardly be overstated.
He was somewhat forgotten because especially his tables and chairs where sometimes anonymous but now his furniture designs are sought after by afficionada all over the world. No wonder because his designs are humble, simple and at the same time genious and beautiful.
