Sideboard ‘OS 29’ by Arne Vodder
Rare sideboard designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbler in the 1950’s in Denmark. This credenza counts 2 doors and 6 drawers and has a playful, colourful appearance. The white and yellow sliding doors for instance can be taken out and flipped over to the rosewood side for a more sober look. The height of the slightly slanted shelves inside is adjustable and the bookmatched veneer on top shows a beautiful grain. No wonder this OS 29 is considered one of Vodder’s most beautiful sideboards. A small crack in the top left corner of the yellow door has been restored. There’s also a small chip of wood missing from this door near the pin that holds the door in place, but it’s not too remarkable. The system to take the door out and put it back in is undamaged. One darker area on the top . Further the whole sideboard is in an excellent condition with hardly any using marks. The drawers run very smooth and are marked with a maker’s label and Danish quality furniture label inside. This gem, especially this edition with the colourful façade, is considered a true collector’s item.

Danish designer and architect Arne Vodder (1926-2009) was trained as an architecture student under the mentorship of Finn Juhl, one of the pioneers of Scandinavian modernism. . After his studies he worked as a designer for Hindsgaul in Copenhagen, where he focused mainly on office furnishings. In 1950 he opened his own architecture and design studio, together with architect Anton Borg Vodder. The duo developed more than 1,000 low-cost houses in the 1950’s. Vodder and Borg kept working together until the seventies.
Vodder’s rise to become a famous designer came in the 1960’s. An era where modern design got finally accepted more widely, especially in corporate, professional spaces. He is a part of what can be called the ‘second generation’ of innovative 20th century Danish furniture designers, together with his peers like Verner Panton. They followed in the footsteps of people like Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, translating their philosophy and Scandinavian craftsmanship into a more modern design language.
Many of Vodder’s pieces, created for manufacturers like France & Søn, Fritz Hansen, and Sibast, feature restrained forms that exude strength and durability, prioritizing substance over avant-garde style. He also had a refined eye for detail: the beauty of the grain in wood and the subtle, elegant finish of his pieces.
He liked to play with assymetry in his desks, sideboards and bookcases. One of the best examples is his Model 29 sideboard, that has four different sections, each serving a unique function: open shelves for vertical storage, cupboards concealed by sliding panels made of contrasting wood veneers and colored laminate panels that could be reversed as well.
Arne Vodder died on december 20th of 2009 but his legacy continues to influence modern furniture and interior design.
