Set of 8 dining chairs by Tijsseling Hulmefa
This set of 8 dining chairs was designed and produced by Tijsseling and Hulmefa in the Netherlands during the 1960’s for their Propos series. There’s eight chairs in total, 4 of them have a teak frame, 4 an oak frame but they were all stained in the same colour, making them go well together as one big set. The whole set was re-upholstered in a dove greige quality fabric from the Belgian brand Aristide. Also the foam underneath was completely renewed, together with the curved backrest it assures comfort, also during long dining evenings. Some small using marks on the frame, as shown in the picture but in good restored condition.

The Tijsseling factory found its origin in Barneveld in Holland where Hermanus Jacobus Tijsseling bought a carpenter shop in 1894. Quickly he started a store where he sold beautiful, durable furniture and music organs. In November 1930 Hermanus Jacobus moved to Nijkerk where he started a big production facility. By the end of the thirties, he already had 90 workers in service. During World War a part of the factory was bombed and rebuilt quickly afterwards. During its golden era, from the post-war years up until the oil crisis in the 1970’s, the factory employed over 300 people. The factory even had their own fire squad, a football club and shooting range. They worked with designers like Gijs van der Sluis. Their approach in style was often rather minimalistic. Another famous design was the Hairpin desk with metal legs. The clean lines and quality from their Propos series make that people mistake it often for being Danish design.
