Trained as an architect, Georg Leowald (108-1969) brought architectural thinking into everyday objects. In post-war Germany, when design was being reimagined from the ground up, he turned his attention to furniture—especially chairs—believing that good design should be clear, functional, and humane.
Leowald’s work is rooted in Bauhaus and modernist principles: clean lines, balanced proportions, and an honest use of materials. He tried to avoid ornament and spectacle, focusing instead on comfort, structure, and longevity. In 1949, his talent gained international recognition when he won first prize in a Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) furniture competition in New York.
Best known for his collaborations with the German manufacturer Wilkhahn during the 1950s and 1960s, Leowald created seating that feels both disciplined and inviting—crafted in wood, leather, and early molded plastics. Some pieces reflect the optimism of the Space Age, while others remain timelessly restrained.
Alongside his design practice, Leowald was an influential educator, teaching architecture and product design and helping shape post-war industrial design in Germany. He was wary of excess, Leowald’s designs rather speak softly through clarity, purpose and thoughtful construction.
