2 bobbin chairs (Sold)

These ‘Bobbin’ or spool chairs emerged in the late 17^th century in the US and Northern Europe and have been made ever since. Woodworkers used a lathe to turn wood into these distinct, repeating spherical shapes. Legend has it that early furniture makers actually used real, leftover wooden bobbins from textile mills to decorate the legs and spindles of chairs and beds. In France you could find these chairs a lot in the 18th century parlors and boudoirs, as a symbol of status and taste. Today they are a nice addition as a side chair, balancing between nostalgic, rustic charm and modern chic. There have been re-issues in the 1970’s but the older, real antique edition of these chairs have a rush seating that has been attached with small nails to the frame as on this set. The dark solid wood and rush is in good condition with some using marks as shown in the pictures.
