Glass & travertine dining table by Willy Ballez
Dining table designed by the Belgian designer Willy Ballez during the 1970’s. With his tables, Ballez makes a crossover between the natural travertine material and a modern, tight design. The combination of the airy glass top with the heavy, constructivist travertine foot keeps the design perfectly in balance. The see through surface allows the guests to admire the architectural structure of the travertine column beneath. This glass top is a new one, made according to the exact original measurements, including the beveled edges. The travertine has still the natural crevasses, they were not filled nor honed and it’s in good condition. The glass is in mint condition.

There’s little known about Willy Ballez, a Belgian designer active mainly in the 1970s, known for his work in furniture and object design. Especially his tables are highly sought after items among collectioneurs. Ballez studied design and initially worked at several design agencies before founding his own design studio in 1970. Throughout his career, he drew a wide array of objects, ranging from furniture and light fixtures to kitchenware and office accessories. Even stands for trade fairs and exhibitions and film and theater sets were sketched out on Ballez’ drawing table. In addition to his design practice, Ballez taught at design schools, including the École supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels. He passed away in 2008, leaving behind mostly pieces that were sculptural, architectural and combined especially stone like travertine or marble on one hand and glass on the other.
