Dining table
Iconic dining table, designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbler in Stenstrup, Denmark in the 1960’s. Arne Vodder, one of the best designers Denmark has known, shows his skills on this piece. Fully extended this is a very comfortable table sitting for 10, maximum 12 people if you put two people at each end. The depth of 124 cm allows to have an enormous banquet feast with numerous dishes. Arne Vodder’s smartness in design went down to the tripod legs being most used when the table is fully extended. The central legs have small metal feet that can be adjusted slightly so the table remains perfectly horizontally straight without any dipping in the center. The legs and banding are solid rosewood. The book matched rosewood veneer has a beautiful grain drawing and perfectly covers the ends and the two leaves, making the seams almost invisible.
The original French polish had become dull on a few places, therefore we sanded the top and varnished all leaves with two layers of matte satin finish to protect this beautiful piece for years to come. This table was originally available with one or two leaves. This example has both leaves. One of the solid rosewood aprons is lighter in colour than the others. Further in excellent condition. No label present anymore but the measurements, build quality and used materials are a one on one match with the ‘212’ by Vodder for Sibast.

Danish designer and architect Arne Vodder (1926-2009) was trained as an architecture student under the mentorship of Finn Juhl, one of the pioneers of Scandinavian modernism. . After his studies he worked as a designer for Hindsgaul in Copenhagen, where he focused mainly on office furnishings. In 1950 he opened his own architecture and design studio, together with architect Anton Borg Vodder. The duo developed more than 1,000 low-cost houses in the 1950’s. Vodder and Borg kept working together until the seventies.
Vodder’s rise to become a famous designer came in the 1960’s. An era where modern design got finally accepted more widely, especially in corporate, professional spaces. He is a part of what can be called the ‘second generation’ of innovative 20th century Danish furniture designers, together with his peers like Verner Panton. They followed in the footsteps of people like Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, translating their philosophy and Scandinavian craftsmanship into a more modern design language.
Many of Vodder’s pieces, created for manufacturers like France & Søn, Fritz Hansen, and Sibast, feature restrained forms that exude strength and durability, prioritizing substance over avant-garde style. He also had a refined eye for detail: the beauty of the grain in wood and the subtle, elegant finish of his pieces.
He liked to play with assymetry in his desks, sideboards and bookcases. One of the best examples is his Model 29 sideboard, that has four different sections, each serving a unique function: open shelves for vertical storage, cupboards concealed by sliding panels made of contrasting wood veneers and colored laminate panels that could be reversed as well.
Arne Vodder died on december 20th of 2009 but his legacy continues to influence modern furniture and interior design.
