Coat rack by Gerard Kuijpers
This exceptional coat rack is part of the oeuvre of Belgian artist designer Gerard Kuijpers. He designed and produced this coat rack in the 1990’s in a limited edition of six. Kuijpers is an auto-didact, has been exploring and experimenting the physical and poetical possibilities of steel, glass, stone and wood for over 40 years. In his atelier in Mechelen, Kuijpers brings these materials together, looking for equilibrum and tension, for the moments when these honest materials bond in a relationship while maintaining their singular characteristics. In this exceptional piece, 67 unpolished glass plates are floating in between two big slabs of Belgian bluestone, held togther by only steel slats and metal bolts. Sunlight passing through the unpolished glass, will be scattered and diffused, it might even be defracted into a rainbow at a certain angle. The two glass plates on top holding the clothes hanger and bluestone hat rack, are polished. The work is very honest, Cuypers visibly displays all the joints, bolts and nuts.
This minimalist, timeless piece is a rare find and in very good condition, as shown in the pictures.

*This piece requires special measures when it comes to the transport because it’s heavy, precious and fragile at the same time.
Born in 1962, Kuijpers is a Flemish artist, sculptor and designer based in Mechelen. His career, spanning already over 40 years started in the early 1980’s with a first exhibiton of steel and marble objects in Brussels that put him immediately on the international map.
Kuijpers is an autodidact and his spontaneous searching, testing and trying led work after work to a growing oeuvre. He makes things that have a purpose and function, but that’s not the end for Kuijpers. Every object needs to be the result of a sustained effort. In order to delve to the essence, to the core of an object he puts elements together, looking for tension and balance, organic materials versus human intervention, usability combined with poetry.
Kuijpers art is honest, he’s not hiding anything. On the contrary, he is showing you all the joints, bolts, wires, screws and seams that are used to build his creations.
His practice is dominated by steel, glass and natural stones. More often than not he lets the stones’ shapes and textures be the basis on which he will determine the directon of the work. He constantly challenges physics, especially gravity. His work ‘dancing stones’ is a perfect example, with gigantic blocks of stone being balanced on a thin metal rod. While turning the stone the spectator feels the heaviness and lightness at the same time. Even a gentle breeze will be able to move the stone.
Kuijpers is this year exhibiting in Musée de Woluwe, at Electric Paris, during Milan Design Week and in Chateau de la Fonainebleau among other places. His work is definitely hot right now, but he prefers to build firmly further on his manifest, an oeuvre of pieces that not only require knowledge of materials and forms but that is also an ode tot the creativity of mankind.
