Brutalist coffee table by Paul Kingma
A square brutalist coffee table designed and produced by Paul Reiner Kingma in The Netherlands in 1982. This rare piece has a top composed out of concrete, natural stones from around the world and copper. Marked and dated ‘P. Kingma ’82. With two loose L-shaped sheets of black lacquered metal working together as a stable foot. Some small chipping on two of the corners, further in good condition.

Dutch sculptor, mosaic artist, and designer Paul Kingma is renowned for his strikingly elegant ceramic and stone coffee tables.
Born in The Hague in 1931, Kingma honed his artistic skills in Arnhem before studying at the Rijksakademie (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Throughout his career, he was commissioned to create public sculptures in various Dutch cities, including Utrecht, Eindhoven, and Amersfoort. However, it was in the realm of mosaic art where he gained lasting recognition as a designer of collectible furniture. Passionately devoted to his craft, Kingma once declared, “The next table is the most beautiful.”
From the late 1960s through the mid-1980s, Kingma produced a remarkable series of one-of-a-kind tables, known as the Kingma or Tableaux Series. These tables featured intricate mosaics and stones, with Kingma eventually incorporating fossils and petrified wood into his designs. He gathered these materials during his travels across the globe, foraging and collecting unique finds along the way.
Kingma’s vision was to craft tables that were complete, self-contained design objects in their own right. Beyond his furniture work, Kingma also taught sculpture and mosaic at the Institute of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of distinctive, timeless designs.
